Old Testament: Exodus 32:32, 33, Psalm 69:28, Daniel 12:1
New Testament: Philippians 4:3; Revelation 3:5; 13:8; 17:8; 20:12, 15; 21:27; Luke 10:20
I looked up the book of life in the Old and New Testaments and it is mentioned 12 times. It is mentioned 4 times in the Old Testament and 8 times in the New Testament. As I looked at these verses, I found five functions of the book of life. First, the phrase “since the creation of the world” appears twice in two verses. Second, the verse refers to the book of life of the Lamb four times. Third, it refers to a book of names, and fourth, it mentions that it is erased or blotted out of the book of life in two verses.
First, the function of the Book of Life, ‘since the creation of the world’
“All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the creation of the world” (Revelation 13:8).
“….. the inhabitants of the earth, whose names have not been written in the book of life from the creation of the world, will be amazed when they see the beast that was, and is not, but is to come” (Revelation 17:8).
When we look at these two passages, we can see that the Book of Life is the records of those who lived on earth from the creation of the world until the Lord’s great white throne judgment. And what I am saying clearly is that the words ‘those who dwell on the earth whose names have not been written from the creation of the world’ in Revelation 13:8 mean that they must be written in the Book of Life while living on this earth.
The Second, Book of Life, the ‘Lamb’s Book of Life’
‘The Book of Life of the Lamb that was Slain’ (Revelation 13:8)
‘The Book of Life of the Lamb’ (Revelation 21:27)
When the Lord Jesus Christ is expressed as the ‘Lamb’, it implies the blood of Jesus.
In order to receive forgiveness for the sins of the saints of the Old Testament era, they went to the temple with a lamb and offered a sacrifice by shedding blood, thereby achieving the effect of forgiveness of sins. When we think of the Lamb, we are connected to the shedding of blood and forgiveness of sins. Therefore, the ‘Lamb’s Book of Life’ means that Jesus Christ blotted out our sins by dying and shedding blood, and when we believe this fact, the effect of forgiveness of sins by Jesus’ blood is also revealed to me. If I receive forgiveness of sins and am born again in this way, my name will be recorded in the Book of Life in the kingdom of heaven.
Therefore, the fact that the Book of Life will be present at the Great White Throne Judgment in Revelation 20:12-15 is to confirm whether the names of those who survived in the Millennium Kingdom at that time were recorded in the Book of Life.
The third Lamb’s Book of Life’s function is ‘a book that records names’
In the 12 Bible verses I looked up through the Old and New Testaments, the function of the Book of Life is a book that records the names of those who have been saved. It is described as a book that records the names of those who will not enter the lake of fire but will enter heaven. In Revelation 20:15, it says, ‘Whoever is not found written in the book of life will be thrown into the lake of fire.’
The fourth is that in two verses, there is a mention of the book of life being blurred or erased.
Exodus 32:32, 33 is the content of Moses’ intercession to God when Moses went up to Mount Sinai and fasted for 40 days while receiving the Ten Commandments and the revelation of the tabernacle, and while Moses was at the foot of Mount Sinai, they made a calf idol and worshiped it, saying that Moses would not come down, and when God was angry with the Israelites and was about to destroy them all. When Moses said, “Blot out my name from the book that you have written,” God responded, “Everyone who has sinned against me, I will blot out of my book.” Also, in Revelation 3:5, it says, “He who overcomes will be clothed in white garments, and I will not erase his name from the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.”
In Psalm 69:28, it says, “Blot them out of the book of life, and do not let them be written with the righteous.” Looking at these three verses, the words “blot out” and “blot out” mean that even if a name is written in the book of life, in some cases, the name may be erased from the book of life.
Fifthly, the book of life placed on the Great White Throne Judgment is the book that will be used for those who survive the millennium. Those who survive the millennium must be judged. They will be transformed in an instant before being judged and become spiritual beings. Of course, they are a little different from those who resurrect those who did not believe in Jesus. Those who died without being saved since the creation of the world will be resurrected for judgment at the Great White Throne Judgment. And those who joined Satan, who was released from the abyss at the end of the millennium, all died in the fire that came down from heaven. They will also be resurrected to stand at the Great White Throne Judgment. However, there are billions of people who lived in the millennium who did not join Satan. They are not those who were redeemed by the blood of Jesus, but those who followed the laws of Christ Jesus, the King, Jehovah God of the millennium, and so they will not enter the lake of fire. For those who have come, their names will be compared in the book of life at the Great White Throne Judgment and led to the eternal world. They will enter the eternal world, but they will not enter the holy city, New Jerusalem, where only the bride of Jesus enters.
